A classical violin student since the age of four, Marie-Claire Saindon first showed interest in composition while in high school, where she wrote and produced her first musical, "Jeanne" (2003). She was later able to publish her women's choir piece, Le train d'hiver (2002), with Boosey & Hawkes in 2006, which then enabled her to write more often for that specific voice format. While studying French-Canadian fiddle, Irish singing, and gypsy-jazz violin on her own time, Marie-Claire completed a Bachelor's degree in Composition at the Schulich School of Music (McGill University) in 2007 and a Master's degree in Composition: Film and Multimedia music at Université de Montréal in 2010, under the supervision of Ana Sokolovic and Pierre-Daniel Rheault. She has since then been commissioned by ensembles and troupes such as Arkéa, Fíolütrôniq, Bella Voce, Harmonia Choir of Ottawa, TrickPony, Théâtre Filament, and Concerto Della Donna. In 2013, she won first place in the SOCAN Young Composers' national awards in the Godfrey-Ridout vocal category with her choir piece Øst for vinden (2012). Marie-Claire is currently working with Emmy award winning director Colby Gottert (Voyage of the Vezo, 2010) and on other musical projects, both on stage and on film. |
