James O'Callaghan est un compositeur et artiste sonore basé à Montréal. Sa musique, qui appartient également aux mondes acoustique et électroacoustique, tire souvent son matériel sonore d’objets trouvés amplifiés ainsi que des sons de l'environnement naturel et urbain.
Ses œuvres d’O’Callaghan ont été interprétées en Amérique du Nord, en Europe, en Nouvelle-Zélande et au Japon ainsi que dans le cadre de nombreux festivals, et il a reçu des commandes du Groupe de Recherches Musicales, l’Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada, Ensemble Paramirabo et Quasar quatuor de saxophones. En 2014, son œuvre Isomorphia a gagné le Grand Prix John-Weinzweig de la Fondation SOCAN et était finaliste aux Prix Juno dans la catégorie Composition classique de l’année. En 2013, son œuvre Objects-Interiors a gagné le premier prix du concours JTTP de la Communauté électroacoustique canadienne. Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise en musique (2014) de l’Université McGill, sous la direction de Philippe Leroux, où il y a enseigné un cours d’introduction à la composition électroacoustique. Il a reçu son baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l'Université Simon Fraser, où il a étudié avec Barry Truax, David MacIntyre, Rodney Sharman et Arne Eigenfeldt. Il a également participé à des ateliers avec Rodney Sharman, Michel Gonneville, Giorgio Magnanensi, R. Murray Schafer et Kaija Saariaho. His works have been performed across North America, in Europe, New Zealand and Japan, featured in various festivals, and he has been commissioned by the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Ensemble Paramirabo and Quasar quatuor de saxophones. In 2014, his work Isomorphia for orchestra and electronics was nominated for a JUNO Award for Classical Composition of the year. In 2013, his work Objects-Interiors won the first prize in the Canadian Electroacoustic Community’s JTTP Awards. He received a Master of Music degree in composition from McGill University in 2014, studying with Philippe Leroux, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts honours degree from Simon Fraser University in 2011, studying with Barry Truax, David MacIntyre, Rodney Sharman and Arne Eigenfeldt. He has also studied and taken workshops with Michel Gonneville, Kaija Saariaho, Lasse Thoresen, and R. Murray Schafer. |
